About The IPC Department:

  • The IPC Department is committed to improving the patient safety by promoting excellence in the practice of infection prevention and control (IPC). It employs evidence-based practice and applies of epidemiological principles. This is accomplished through education, training, communication, consultation, standards, research and surveillance of health-related infections.
  • DAFH is renowned for its world-class IPC Department and has successfully treated numerous patients over the years including world leaders from abroad. The IPC’s professional responsibility is to act as a facilitator to reduce the risk of infection within health care. DAFH’s team of IPC specialists is experienced, sincere and passionate about providing the very best care for their patients and staff.
  • IPC collaborate in teams to ensure that the patient receives the highest quality, safest care for his/her condition, and collaborate with all hospital departments to prevent and control healthcare associated infections. DAFH recruits the finest doctors in the region. These talented physicians will be trained through a rigorous residency program.

The residency programs are 3 full years of training.

Time Table:
  • Residents will work five days/week from 9:00am-5:00pm.
  • In addition to Friday, residents will have one day off (either Saturday or Thursday). During the day off, residents will be expected to achieve academic goals specified by the department or medical council.
  • Each resident will have six on-call night shifts per month.

Duties and Privileges:

  • Residents should complete clinical and environmental daily rounds, respond to consultations, and provide education and training.
  • Residents should conduct two rounds on isolated and high-risk patients per day, in the morning and afternoon.
  • Residents will conduct surveillance activity.  Each patient area in the hospital will be assigned to a specific resident.  The resident should follow the patients under surveillance from admission to discharge.  The resident will be responsible for the completeness of all of the patient's documents.
  • Residents will have two laboratory rounds to collect positive microbiology and serology results, and they will discuss the results with the attending physician or his resident, and may advise isolation.
  • During the first six months (1-6 month), residents are not allowed to give either verbal or written orders, but residents can write down their notes. However, these notes are not to replace those of the registrar, fellow, or senior resident.  They can observe violations and report them in writing to the IPC registrar or senior staff.
  • During the second half of the first year (7-12 month), residents may write memos, notes and orders, but to be valid, the material must be signed and stamped by registrars, fellows and senior residents. Junior residents may not use stamps in their first year.
  • During the second and third years, residents will rotate in specialized units. Residents must follow the policies of these units and adhere to the privileges as stated in the detailed program.  They can conduct audits, observe violations during their rounds and provide in-job education.

  • In each rotation period, a syllabus will be provided by the program. Residents must study these syllabi very carefully and adhere to all activities.

Certification:

Residents should achieve the following certifications:

  • National Degree in Infection Prevention and Control
  • Master degree in Clinical Pathology, Epidemiology, or another clinical specialty

Recruitment:

  • The number of selected residents is determined by each specialty according to the program requirements, which change each year.
  • Each candidate's qualifications will be carefully considered through a selection process.
  • Typically, two candidates are selected and two candidates are selected for the waiting list.

  • M.B. B.Ch. Prior work experience or training in a university hospital is preferred

      • Demonstrate effective leadership and management skills
  • Candidates should be faculty graduated, have completed their house officer period, and have no military obligation.
  • The minimum graduation grade is "Very Good", and preferably "Excellent".
  • Candidates will be evaluated according to the following schema:
    • Graduation Grade: 50% of score (5+)
    • Personal Skills: 10% of score (1+)
    • DAF Exam: 20% of score (2+)
    • Interview: 20% of score (2+)

Promotion:

  • Residents who have completed the three year program successfully have the opportunity to join DAF as fellows for five years, once they have finished their master's degree.
  • Residents will be offered an opportunity to travel abroad for either an observership or a fellowship.
  • Residents will have the chance to complete their MD degree.
  • Residents will receive recommendation letters and certification of training by the end of the third year.

  • Application opens: Mid February
  • Application closes: End of February
  • Selection, examination and interviews: During March
  • Start orientation: 1st May
  • Start programs: 1st June
  • Annual leaves: Residents are entitled to an annual vacation of three weeks/year according to general hospital rules
  • Second recruitment may start 1st of September
